Information and Frequently Asked Questions
---------------------------------------------------------
Our ‘Blue Pine’
Log cabins, homes, and wood products are salvaged from our Rocky Mountain
‘standing dead’ ‘Blue’ Lodgepole Pine
that has been killed by the Mountain Pine Beetle.
We then recycle the dead timber into beautiful and unique wood products.
This epidemic has devastated
millions of acres of forest in the Colorado Rockies and there is no end in
sight. The Forest Services predict
that 90% of our Lodgepole forests will succumb over the next several years,
forever changing our forest-scape. Each
piece of ‘Blue Pine’
features the random, unique, and
beautiful blue-grey streaked tinting, sometimes with red’s, maroon’s, and
occasionally yellows.
All of our logs are
dried naturally by the forces of nature, and there is very little moisture left
in our products. Planning is done
in the 10-16% moisture range (the kiln dried standards) to ensure a quality
finish and wood stability.
Utilizing these trees, by ‘salvaging and
recycling’, is a sound step in sustainability.
We urge you to take the step: “Be Green,
Build ‘Blue’, by ordering and promoting the
use of these beautiful wood products from our local forests.
We believe
it is our responsibility to use these ‘gifts of nature’ as a step towards
sustainability for future generations.
We have committed to giving a percentage of our revenue to forestry
management/sustainability programs, and to housing programs that help people in
home ownership.

‘Blue Pine’
beetle killed timber products are available?
We offer a
wide array of ‘menu’ offerings and grades of
‘Blue Pine’
products to suit the most discerning and creative palate.
That little Mountain Pine Beetle has impeccable taste and has rated our
‘Blue Pine’ Recycled Timber as a FIVE STAR ‘must try’ experience!
Find out for yourself what these hungry little
critters are raving about.
Thoroughly convinced of the ‘expert’
reviews, we have decided to rate our products on the following scale:
The ‘Blue Pine’ Mountain Pine Beetle Tastiest Wood Ratings:
Delicious; Scrumptious; Gourmet; and Chef’s Request
1.
Our ‘Delicious’ Blue Pine:
*This
product comes from a number of areas in the US Rocky Mountain Forests.
It is rated as a #2 Pine, but due to the ‘blue staining and streaking’ is
graded as a #3 Pine. There are
some knots and character but it is generally significantly ‘cleaner and clearer’
than our local
**This
is a kiln-dried product and will typically run at a 10-16% moisture level as
allowed by industry standards. This Delicious line is available as both Tongue
and Groove (T&G), and plank style flooring.
Our standard line is ‘good two sides’, i.e., milled the same on both
faces so you can select which face to use.
What variety of products are available to me?
This
flooring is available as:
§
A Planed
(P) faced product,
§
A
Rough-Sawn (RS) faced product
What thickness’, widths, and lengths are available?
It is
available in both 1”x 6” (finished to ¾” thick x 5” exposed face), and a 1”x 8”
(finished to ¾” thick x 6 ¾” exposed face) Random lengths, but generally about
equal amounts of 6’, 8’, 10’, and 12’ lengths provided. We can usually provide
this product in 10” and 12” stock but there are some cautions to be noted, and
it generally takes 7-10 additional business days to have it ready for
you.
The wider
widths are usually a bit less colorful; the blue is generally more prominent on
the outside edges of the boards, in the ‘sapwood’, not in the ‘heartwood’ at the
center of the tree, and thereby in the middle of the plank.
Further, wider boards, no matter what kind of wood, tend to move more
with changes in temperature and humidity.
This means they tend to want to ‘cup’ and crack more, so they should be
glued and face nailed - we recommend the old fashioned square head cut nails
simply because they are unique and add to the character of the installation.
Can you manufacture products to my specifications?
For only
10% more we can provide whatever profile you chose.
How is the product packaged?
We bundle
this product in 4 to 8 pieces per bundle then band it all together in one ‘bunk’
about 48” wide by up to 36” high.
This allows for unloading by forklift and makes it easier to carry into the site
while helping tremendously to keep the lumber straight and true as it acclimates
to the environment in which you are installing it.
(Please review our acclimatizing and installation guidelines!)
How long does it take to get my order?
Generally
we can have this ready for pickup or delivery within 5-10 business days, but we
ask you to plan on 2 to 3 weeks.
2.
Our ‘Scrumptious’ Blue Pine:
*This
is our local
killed forests’ in our own backyard.
Despite the abundance of trees, the high expense of resort area real
estate (which is where the trees and mills are), extensive manual labor and the
associated expenses, the process of logging, saw-milling, shipping, storing, and
surfacing/planing operations makes it more expensive to produce, especially in
smaller volumes. We
rate this product only as ‘Country Rustic’ and it is abundant with character.
**Most of these products are naturally air dried by the forces of nature, which
is very environmentally friendly, (though we can kiln dry as needed), and
typically run at an 8-14% moisture level.
This Scrumptious line is available as both Tongue and Groove (T&G) and plank
style. We offer our widest variety of sizes and thickness’ in this line. Our
standard 1” product is both beveled on the bottom-side at the tongue and groove
for ease of installation, and ‘kerfed’ (shallow relief cuts that also aid in
strong bonding for gluing installations) as is common with quality flooring
manufacturers.
NOTE:
Due to the more rustic nature of these local products, to encourage use,
and to help ensure your satisfaction, we will include, at no extra charge to
you, an overage on your order of between 3-5 % to allow for trimming, cut-outs,
and the check marks which naturally occur in naturally dried lumber.
What variety of products are available to me?
This
flooring is available as:
§
A Planed
(P) faced product,
§
A
Rough-Sawn (RS) faced product,
§
A
Circular-Sawn (CS) faced product,
What thickness’, widths, and lengths are available?
This product is available in 1”, 2” (finished to 1 ½” thick), and 3” (finished
to 2 ½” thick) stock as either flooring or decking.
The 2” and 3” stock is most commonly used in installations where the
bottom-side of the board is exposed on the ceiling of the first floor.
There are a wide variety of face profiles available from which you can
chose. Face widths are wider than
our Delicious line: 6” = 5 ¼” face, 8” = 7 ¼” face, 10” = 9 ¼” face, 12” = 11 ¼”
face.
Can you manufacture products to my specifications?
Yes, for
only 10% more we can provide whatever profile you chose.

Generally we can have our 1x6 stock ready for you in 2-3 weeks, but the 1 x 8”,
10”, and 12” products generally take 2-4 weeks to have ready for you.
3.
Our ‘Gourmet’ Blue Pine:
*
This product comes from a number of areas in the US Rocky Mountain Forests.
This is a #2 structurally graded product that is also kiln dried.
It is also rated a #2 in the Pine category, but due to the ‘blue
streaking and staining’ is graded a #3 Pine.
This product has fewer knots and quite a lot less overall character than
our local ‘Country Rustic’ product listed in the ‘Scrumptious’ category.
If you want a more ‘perfect looking’ Blue Pine wood floor with fewer
knots and other ‘imperfections’, then this is probably what you are seeking.
**This
is a kiln-dried product and will typically run at a 10-16% moisture level as
allowed by industry standards.
Can you manufacture products to my specifications?
No. Sorry but this product is not
available for custom ordering.
What thickness’, widths, and lengths are available?
It is
available in both 1”x 6” (a 5 ¼” exposed face), and a 1”x 8” (a 7 ¼” exposed
face). Generally only one size and
length is available per order - from 8’ lengths to 16’ lengths.
On larger orders we can provide a ‘pick and pull service’ for an
additional charge.
What variety of products are available to me?
This
flooring is only available as:
§
A Planed
(P) faced product, available only in the T&G style of flooring.
How is the product packaged?
This
product is not bundled; it comes to you in ‘bunks’ up to 48” wide and up to
about 36” high.
Once the
bands are broken, and the lumber moved in to acclimate, you must take
precautions to keep it stacked properly and rachet-strapped to ensure it remains
straight and true.
How long does it take to get my order?
Generally
we can have this ready for you to pick up or deliver in 7-14 business days
4.
Our ‘Chef’s Request’ Blue Pine:
*
Our new
Hand-Hewn (HH) faced product, which is getting rave reviews and looks like the
old fashioned way of making boards by scraping down the face of the lumber.
This is also called a ‘hand-scraped finish.
*
Have a specific request? We can
provide a wide variety of specifications and profiles – let us know what you
want and we will be happy to work with you on any custom product you may want!
How much do these products cost?
The most commonly used product is the 1x6 Tongue and Groove (T&G), but we also
have 1x8’s, 1x10’s, and 1x12’s with a variety of finishes:
Planed, Band-sawn Rough Cut, Circular-sawn Rough Cut, and our Hand-hewn
finish. Our pricing runs from $2.19
s/f to over $5.00 s/f*, depending upon the product you chose and the amount that
you want.
Pricing varies by category and is partly dependent upon the amount you want.
We produce almost everything to order and there are obviously some
economies of scale. Soon we will be providing our eco-friendly products
through dealers and green building products suppliers to make product viewing
and ordering easier for you, our customer. Licensed
and insured contractors, dealers, and distributors are eligible for additional
discounts. Dealer inquiries
welcome!
We encourage you to refer to our website which is still being upgraded and added
to frequently… so check back often.
Don’t forget that you can add our baseboard stock, our door and window trim, and
a whole lot more to really round out and tie together the ‘Blue Pine’ look in
your home or office building.
Some Notes:
All stock comes in the lumber industry nominal thickness’ standards as follows:
§
1” stock is
finished to ¾” thick
§
2” stock is finished to 1 ½” thick
§
3” stock is finished to 2 ½” thick
All products feature a 3/8” tongue.
Like all wood products, you should count on some waste for cutouts of knots,
‘checks’ (cracks in the planks), and other ‘imperfections’.
Industry accepted standards are 10% -15% overage from the actual square
footage. Please be sure to follow
our ‘Acclimatization Guidelines’ and our ‘Installation Guidelines’
to help ensure a successful installation and a beautiful and unique floor.
We highly recommend that you use a professional installer or skilled and
experienced contractor/carpenter whom follows the proper guidelines for
installation.
