GreenLife Industries, LLC’s ‘Blue Pine’

Recycled Timber and Lumber Products

Information and Frequently Asked Lumber Questions

---------------------------------------------------------

Our ‘Blue Pine’ log homes and wood products are salvaged from our Rocky Mountain standing dead forests of ‘Blue’ Lodgepole Pine that has been devastated by the Mountain Pine Beetle epidemic.   We then recycle this salvaged timber into beautiful and unique wood products.

This epidemic has devastated millions of trees in the Colorado Rockies and there is no end in sight.  The Forest Services and environmental specialists predict that 90% of our Lodgepole forests, quite possibly from Mexico to Canada, will be killed and succumb over the next several years, forever changing our forest-scape.

We believe it is our responsibility to use these ‘gifts of nature’ as a step towards sustainability for future generations.  We have committed to giving a percentage of our revenue to forestry management/sustainability programs, and to housing programs that help people in home ownership. Utilizing these trees, by ‘salvaging and recycling’, is a sound step in sustainability.  We urge you to take the step: “Be Green, Build ‘Blue’, by using and promoting the use of these beautiful wood products from our local forests.

Each and every piece of ‘Blue Pine’ is truly unique, and features the beautiful blue-grey tinting and streaking that runs up through the clear pine and blends into occasional red’s, maroon’s, and even some yellows, as it courses into the rich graining and around the knots.  Those rotten little bugs are actually pretty good ‘artists’…but it is ‘natures artwork’ and we can not control the appearance by providing you a certain look – it varies and that is simply part of the beauty!

This wood can also be painted or stained, so you certainly have that option if you simply want to buy our eco-friendly products to support local Colorado businesses, and the use of this otherwise wasted timber.  Obviously, the coloring in the wood will show through lightly colored stains, or those that are not ‘semi-solid’ or ‘solid pigmented’ stains.  Paints cover really well, so please don’t believe you are confined to the woods natural coloring

All of our logs are dried naturally by the forces of nature, and relative to living timber lumber production, there is very little moisture left in our products; but kiln drying is also often utilized to meet industry standards.  Planing is generally done in the 10-16% moisture range (within kiln dried standards) to ensure a quality finish and wood stability.

We have been in the ‘beetle kill wood marketplace for over four years now and from our market research, we believe you will find that our beautiful and unique products are very affordably priced relative to most solid wood flooring.  Additionally, we give Colorado residents a 10% discount on all product pricing to encourage our fellow Coloradans to use our local and environmentally friendly timber products.  This helps our local economies and provides one piece of the solution in best utilizing billions of dead trees.

New!!!  We are happy to now be able to provide you with both sanding and pre-finishing options in any stain, paint or sealing product you chose!

How many types of ‘Blue Pine’ beetle killed timber products are available?

Those darn little beetles seem to have impeccable taste and have rated our ‘Blue Pine  Recycled Timber Products’ as FIVE STAR delicious – a must try experience! Thoroughly convinced of their ‘expert’ reviews, we have decided to rate our products on the following scale:

The ‘Blue Pine’ Mountain Pine Beetle Tastiest Wood Ratings:

Delicious; Scrumptious; Gourmet; and Chef’s Request

We offer a wide array on our ‘menu’ of offerings.  We have three different grades and several different finishes available in our line of Blue Pine’ products, so we can suit the most discerning and creative palates - we have about 900 different wood products that we produce.  Find out for yourself what these hungry little critters are raving about..……

1.   Our ‘Delicious’ Blue Pine:

*This product can come from a number of areas in the US Rocky Mountain Forests, but a lot of it comes from Colorado forests.  It is rated as a #2 Pine, but due to the ‘blue staining and streaking’ it is graded as a #3 Pine.  There are some knots and character but it is generally significantly ‘cleaner and clearer’ than our certified local Colorado Forest products - it certainly does not have as much character as either the ‘Srumptious’ line or the ‘Gourmet’ line. Customers seeking a ‘cleaner, more contemporary look should buy this product line.

**This product is both air-dried and/or kiln-dried and will typically run at a 10-16% moisture level as allowed by industry standards.

What variety of products are available to me?

This ‘Delicious’ line is available in a wide variety of products: Tongue and Groove (T&G), Lap- style, Plank-style, and all of our Mouldings.

Our standard products are ‘kerfed’ or ‘relief cut’ (shallow cuts/notches that also aid in strong bonding for gluing installations) and/or beveled on the bottom-side for ease of installation. Wood finishes that are available:

§  A Planed (P) smooth faced product,

§  A Rough-surfaced (RS) faced product,

§  A Wire-brushed (WB) faced product,

§  Our new Hand-Hewn (HH) faced product, which is getting rave reviews and looks like the old fashioned way of making boards by scraping down the face of the lumber.  This is also called a ‘hand-scraped’ finish.

Our siding/paneling stock is profile specific and may or may not be available in the same finishes as the flooring. Our siding and flooring is generally kerfed on the backside.

Our mouldings are all profile specific and are relief cut on the backside.

What thickness’, widths, and lengths are available?

Flooring and siding/paneling stock is available in 1” x 4”, 1” x 6”, and 1”x 8” stock. Special orders for 10” and 12” stock may be available – please call or email for this information.  The wider widths are usually a bit less colorful; the blue is generally more prominent on the outside edges of the boards, in the ‘sapwood’, not in the ‘heartwood’ at the center of the tree/board.  Further, wider boards, no matter what kind of wood, tend to move more with changes in temperature and humidity.  This means they tend to want to ‘cup’ and crack more, so they should be glued and face nailed - we recommend the old fashioned square head cut nails simply because they are unique and add to the character of the installation.

Random lengths, but generally we recommend equal amounts of 8’, 10’, and 12’ lengths for flooring.  Siding/paneling stock, and our mouldings, can be from 8-16’ in length.

Can you manufacture products to my specifications?

We have standard products but for only 10% to 20% more we can provide whichever profile, or combination of profiles that you chose. Our paneling and mouldings are grouped into three price classes – moderately detailed mouldings run 10% more than our base line of products, and the most detailed mouldings run 20% more than our base line of products.

How is the product packaged?

We package this product in 4 to 8 pieces per bundle, then band it all together in one ‘bunk’ up to 48” wide, by up to about 36” high.  This allows for both easy unloading by forklift and makes the lumber easier to carry into the site, while helping tremendously to keep the lumber straight and true as it acclimates to the environment in which you are installing it.  (Please review our Acclimatizing Guidelines and our Installation Guidelines!)

How long does it take to get my order?

Generally we can have this ready for pickup or delivery within 5-10 business days, but we ask you to plan on 2 to 3 weeks.

2.    Our ‘Scrumptious’ Blue Pine:

*This is our local Colorado Timber Product, salvaged from the ‘standing dead beetle-

killed forests’ in our own backyard.  We rate this product only as ‘Country Rustic Character Wood’ and it is abundant with character.  Despite the abundance of dead trees, it actually costs us more to produce this product. The high expense of resort area real estate (which is where the trees and small mills are), the process of logging, saw-milling, shipping, storing/drying, and surfacing/planing operations with extensive manual labor costs, it simply costs more, especially in smaller volumes.  Depending upon volumes, this product can be 5-30% more than our ‘Delicious’ line.

**Most of these products are naturally air dried by the forces of nature, which is very environmentally friendly, (though we can kiln dry as needed), and typically average a 10-16% moisture level.

NOTE:  Due to the more rustic nature of these local products, to encourage use, and to help ensure your satisfaction, we will include, at no extra charge to you, an overage on your order of between 3-5 % to allow for trimming and cut-outs on our ‘Scrumptious Country Rustic Character Wood’ line.

What variety of products are available to me?

We offer our widest variety of sizes and thickness’ in this line. This ‘Scrumptious’ line is available in almost every product we provide: Tongue and Groove (T&G), Lap-style,

Plank-style, and all of our Mouldings.

·         Our standard products are ‘kerfed’ or ‘relief cut’ (shallow cuts/notches that also aid in strong bonding for gluing installations) and/or beveled on the back-side for ease of installation. Wood finishes that are available:

§  A Planed (P) smooth faced product,

§  A Rough-surface (RS) faced product,

§  A Circular-Sawn (CS) faced product,

§  A Wire-brushed (WB) faced product,

§  Our new Hand-Hewn (HH) faced product, which is getting rave reviews and looks like the old fashioned way of making boards by scraping down the face of the lumber.  This is also called a ‘hand-scraped’ finish.

What thickness’, widths, and lengths are available?

This product is available in 1”, 2” (finished to 1 ½” thick), and 3” (finished to 2 ½” thick) stock as either flooring or decking.  The 2” and 3” stock is most commonly used in installations where the bottom-side of the board is exposed on the ceiling of the first floor, or in the case of siding products.  There are a wide variety of face profiles available from which you can chose.

We offer an extremely varied line of un-milled natural and rustic products in this line.  Please refer to our ‘Summary of Products’ document for more information. There are 5 different styles of log homes, mantles, Double and Single Wavy products, natural log siding; many products that you will never find at your local home center or lumberyard.

Can you manufacture products to my specifications?

We have standard products but for only 10% to 20% more we can provide whatever profile, or combination of profiles that you can on our website.  We can also provide custom knife profiles for you.

How is the product packaged?

We bundle this product in 4 to 8 pieces per bundle then band it all together in one ‘bunk’ about 48” wide by up to 36” high.  This allows for unloading by forklift and makes it easier to carry into the site while helping tremendously to keep the lumber straight and true as it acclimates to the environment in which you are installing it.  (Please review our acclimatizing and installation guidelines!)

How long does it take to get my order?

Generally we can have our 1x6” and 1x8” stock ready for you in 2-3 weeks, but the 1x10” or 1 x12” products generally take 2-4 weeks to have ready for you.

 3.  Our ‘Gourmet’ Blue Pine:

* This product comes from a number of areas in the US Rocky Mountain Forests.  This is a #2 structurally graded product that is also Air and Kiln dried.  It is rated a #2 in the Pine category, but due to the ‘blue streaking and staining’ is graded a #3 Pine.  This product has unbelievable character and is  the premium of what we offer. If you are looking only for flooring or paneling with few profile or finish options but want the best, then this is the way to go. This is an Air and Kiln-dried product and will typically run at a 10-16% moisture level as allowed by industry standards.

Can you manufacture products to my specifications?

No.  Sorry but this product is not available for custom ordering.

What thickness’, widths, and lengths are available?

It is available in both 1”x 6” (a 5 ¼” exposed face), and a 1”x 8” (a 7 ¼” exposed face).  Generally only one size and length is available per order - from 8’ lengths to 16’ lengths.  On larger orders we can provide a ‘pick and pull service’ for an additional charge.

What variety of products are available to me?

This product is only available as either Flooring or Paneling in 1x4, 1x6 and 1x8 stock:

A Planed (P) faced product, available only in the T&G style.

How is the product packaged?

This product is not bundled and not currently available in small quantities; it comes to you in ‘bunks’ up to 48” wide and up to about 36” high.

During the acclimatization process, you must take precautions to keep it stacked properly and rachet-strapped to ensure it remains straight and true.

How long does it take to get my order?

Generally we can have this ready for you to pick up or deliver in 7-14 business days, but if you plan on 2-3 weeks, then we are always safe.

4.   Our ‘Chef’s Request’ Blue Pine:

* Have a specific request?  Want different profiles on each side?  The same on each side? We can provide a wide variety of specifications and profiles – let us know what you want and we will be happy to work with you on any custom product that you may want!

How much do these products cost?

Our ‘Delicious’ line is the least expensive, and usually priced at or below other Pine products.  Next is our ‘Scumptious’ line, then our ‘Gourmet’ line, followed by the custom orders we can do in our ‘Chef’s Request’ line.

For flooring and siding/paneling, our pricing runs from $1.19 SF to over $5.00 SF*, depending upon the product you chose and the amount that you want.

For mouldings, we are priced competitively with #2 Pine and up to the Knotty Alder price points – from $.55 LF to over $2.00 LF, depending on the profile and quantity.

Our siding/paneling and mouldings are grouped into three price classes in the ‘Delicious’ and ‘Scrumptious’ lines – as a general rule, moderately detailed profiles run 10% more than our base line of products, and the most detailed profiles run 20% more than our base line of profiles, in each wood rating category.

Pricing varies by category and is partly dependent upon the amount you want - there are up to 30% discounts based on these factors.  We produce almost everything to order and there are obviously some economies of scale, so let us know what you want and we’ll get specific.

Can we get these products pre-finished?

Yes! We are now both pleased and proud to offer both sanding and pre-finishing options!  This is exciting for it is certainly more convenient and often less expensive than doing this yourself.

Where else can I get ‘Blue Pine Recycled Timber Products’?

Soon we will be providing our eco-friendly products through dealers and green building products suppliers. This will make local product viewing and ordering easier for you, our customer. Licensed and insured contractors, dealers, and distributors are eligible for additional discounts.  Dealer inquiries welcome!

We encourage you to refer to our website, which is still being upgraded and added to frequently… so check back often.  Don’t forget that you can add our baseboard stock, our door and window trim, and a whole lot more to really round out and tie together the ‘Blue Pine’ look in your home or office building.

Some More Notes:

All but our Rough Cut Lumber and Natural Timber Products come in the lumber industry nominal thickness’ standards as dimensional lumber:

§  1” stock is finished to ¾” thick

§  2” stock is finished to 1 ½” thick

§  3” stock is finished to 2 ½” thick

All T&G products feature a 3/8” tongue, and all Lap-style siding features a ½” lap.

Like all wood products, you should count on some waste for cutouts of knots, ‘checks’ (cracks in the planks), and other ‘imperfections’.  Industry accepted standards are 10% -15% overage - from the actual square footage measured.  Please be sure to follow our ‘Acclimatization Guidelines’ and our ‘Installation Guidelines’ to help ensure a successful installation and a beautiful and unique product.  We highly recommend that you use a professional installer or skilled and experienced contractor/carpenter whom follows the proper guidelines for installation.
